Steve Merveldt

Owner/President – Colorado Propane Marketing, LLC.

Steve began his Wholesale Propane career in 1997 for the Phillips 66 Company.  As a Wholesale Propane representative, Steve began learning the details of the propane business by managing customer accounts and drawing on the vast resources of Phillips 66.  In addition to customer accounts, Steve would manage the propane supply of 2 proprietary pipelines owned by the company, sending batches of product to key terminals in order to support demand.  Within 5 years, Steve was promoted to Western Plains Sales Manager and was responsible for product supply in 10 states for over 200 retail customers.  At the same time, Phillips 66 merged with Conoco and became ConocoPhillips Company.

For the next 7 years Steve learned the Wholesale Propane market and helped to position ConocoPhillips as a dominate player in the region.  During this important stretch in Steve’s career he successfully managed the propane supply chain by analyzing demand projections, nominating required barrels of propane on Midwest common carrier pipelines, and set local market pricing.  In addition to selling spot market propane, Steve managed seasonal contract pricing, which gave customers a set price over a specified period of time. This taught Steve how to work with Commodity Market Brokers to secure millions of barrels of product at negotiated future prices.

In 2009, ConocoPhillips decided to redirect resources away from propane and eliminated the wholesale business.  Although the segment was very profitable, the company’s plan pointed them in another direction.  This left a large void for propane and un-met demand, and as a result product had to be shipped in from surrounding states.

In 2009 Steve took advantage of the opportunity to supply propane in Colorado and started his own Wholesale Propane Marketing firm, Monument Propane Marketing.  Steve used his experience and large customer base and established a profitable company.  In 2013 he decided to focus on Southern Colorado’s supply needs and has been working towards building a bulk storage facility.  This facility will allow customers in the southern portion of the state to have a local propane supply.

Steve received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Construction Management Engineering from Oklahoma State University in 1986.  Steve is also an active member in the Colorado Propane Gas Association and has held various board positions over the last 5 years.  He currently holds the position of Vice President for the Colorado Propane Education Research Council (CPERC) where he assists in leading Colorado Retail Operators in developing industry safety and educational programs.  Steve is married and has 2 children.
